Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is Matter-over-Thread and will work without an Aqara hub

Aqara has unveiled its latest native Matter device; the Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is a Thread-based device that will work with any Matter controller, so you don’t need to have an Aqara hub in place.

Aqara has fully embraced that new Matter smart home standard with a the likes of the M2 Hub and the new Smart Lock U100 working with Matter.

The Motion and Light Sensor P2 follows up on last year’s Door and Window Sensor P2, which was the first device from the Chinese brand that didn’t require you to be already using an Aqara setup and the Aqara app.

The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 will work with any Matter controller with a Thread border router – such as the new Echo Hub, the 2nd-gen Apple HomePod or a Homey Pro.

Aqara does have its own Matter controller / Thread border router in the works; we’re expecting the M3 Hub to launch in the coming weeks and it looks like being the perfect solution for anyone who already has an array of Aqara’s Zigbee sensors and wants to expand to a Matter system.

Aqara tells us that, when paired with the M3, there will be extra features available for the P2 in the Aqara app such as customizable sensitivity and detection timeout settings.

The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 and is an ultra-wide angle PIR motion sensor with a standalone illumination sensor, offering precise detection up to 7 meters, with a 170° horizontal field of view.

The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is now available globally through Aqara’s Amazon stores. It’s $33.99 Stateside and £29.99 in the UK.
